A selection of Marx's writings ranging from his early works on philosophy, religion, alienation, and Hegelianism, through the materialist conception of history, the theoretical analysis of capitalism, and the politics of revolution. Bender provides informatative introductions setting the context for each set of materials.

Abstract:  Bender writes: "It is our purpose here not to impress the reader with pat Marxist formulas for correcting national ills, but to suggest that he read the selections in this antology in the light of the notion that Marxism has by no means fully spent its potential in those movements which have borne its name thus far. New conditions and a new national and intellectual context require a new Marxist synthesis, and it is this which may well be achieved on the basis of a detailed and incisive assessment of current conditions plus a careful and critical grasping of Marx's contributions to Marxism.
