Breakfast of Biodiversity
The Truth About Rain Forest Destruction

Vandermeer, John; Perfecto, Ivette
Publisher:  Food First Books
Resource Type:  Book

Abstract:  In "Breakfast of Biodiversity" the authors dispel some of the popular myths regarding the conservation of the rain forests. Drawing primarily on Central America they explain the complex relationship between the scientific understanding of how tropical ecosystems work and their functioning within a political econom. They argue that government conservation policies do not work if the root causes are not discovered. As well they say that the biggest threat to the rain forests is agriculture. For the forests to survive there must be a collective struggle for a strategic redistribution of the land. Land use should take into account soil variability. They give us a biological explanation of how the rain forest is constructed. They further contend that even though rain forests are vulnerable to species loss they are suprisingly resilient. If governments used sustainability and land use properly, and reduced chemically induced agriculture the rain forests could be saved.
