Peace Parks
Conservation and Conflict Resolution

Ali, Saleem ed
Publisher:  MIT Press
Year Published:  2007
Resource Type:  Book

Abstract:  This new collections of papers focuses on the relations which connect land use, conservation and peace. The book is at once a historic overview of the elements-economic, social and political that support the concept of peace parks and a discussion of environmental cooperation and development between countries that could help resolve transboundary conflicts. Case studies of existing parks from the Selous-Niassa region linking Tanzania and Mozambique, Peru and Ecuador and plans for new parks such as one in the demiliterized zones between the two Koreas are discussed. The book examines the role of environmentalists, military officers, politicians and indigenous groups and their effects on both ecological management and the potential for peace building.
