Rudd challenged our easy romanticism and crushed our insurrectionary fantasies. Unlike many of his peers, he was still committed to the political ideals that had guided him in youth. But he had wholly reassessed the confrontational tactics and saw that the macho bluster, the calls to 'pick up the gun', had been based in delusion. He and his comrades had fancied themselves a privileged group of revolutionary agents destined to catalyse a white fighting force to aid the people of the world, but had succeeded only in diminishing a base painstakingly built up over years.
