Describes the Nazification of sports in Germany in the 1930s and its broader context.
Abstract: Describes the Nazification of sports in Germany in the 1930s. Mandell stresses the importance of the Berlin Olympics in the ominous political developments preceding World War II. The Nazis learned many lessons from the methodical and lavish staging of the Garmish and Berlin Games, and used these to solidify their control of Germany and eventually of Europe. He also explains how the U.S. was manipulated into participating in the 1936 Olympics in Germany dispite the extensive efforts of American organizations and individuals who staunchly advocated that American athletes boycott the games.
