Abstract: A Dune Adrift explores the history of the small island of Sable, 160 kilometers from the Nova Scotia coast. A stretch of ever changing sand in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean it houses one tree, wild horses descendants of Acadian animals in the 18th century, seals, birds and one small research station manned by one man and an artist and naturalist. De Villiers and Hitle document the island's history with its discovery by roving Vikings to the attempted settlements in the 17th century by the French and Portuguese. They make abundant use of the memoies of those who have lived there particularly TV director Norman Campbell. They argue that the government should continue to keep the station to monitor its weather and fragile eco system.
