Historical Atlas of Toronto

Hayes, Derek
Publisher:  Douglas & McIntyre
Resource Type:  Book

Abstract:  This is a Toronto seen through a cartographic lens. Noted historian and geographer Derek Hayes explores a theme in each of the chapters-from the first European explorers, the rise of Toronto in the 19th century the TTC and postwar suburbs. Many of the maps are stories in and of themselves showing Toronto growing from a small colonial outpost to a town transformed with thousands of people to the size it is today. Victorian -era maps done in bird's eye perspective, although useless for navigating waterways, convey the crowded waterfront, industrial districts and farms north of the city. The book illustrates the historical events that shaped the city. Another series explores Toronto's realtionship to its harbour. It is a beautifully visual look at Toronto that will appeal to historians of the city.
