Abstract: Bottomfeeder explores the impact we are having on sea life. Taras Glescoe takes the reader from Marseilles wondering if the toxic scorpion fish needed for bouillabaisse is endangered to Bangladesh looking at the pesticides and antibiotics that go into making tiger prawn feed. Along the way he notes that by the end of the decade half of the marine products we consume will be farmed. As he points out 3kg of wild fish are needed to produce 1kg of artificially coloured salmon. The farmed salmon escape their cages and infect the wild salmon. Between the subsidising of building new and bigger boats with their array of sonar and radar to find the last schools of fish and the use of bottom trawls which devastate seamounts our overfishing has led to devastating effects on marine life. Glescoe at the end of the book draws our attention to ethical choices we can make.
