We are told that Israel is intrinsically linked to Judaism. Zionists argue that opposition to the former betrays prejudice against the latter. Anti-semites agree, arguing that the problems in the Middle East arise from 'Jewish' problems and that American support for Israel is achieved by 'the Jewish lobby'.
Both sides ignore the real history of Judaism and Zionism, the proud tradition of Jewish socialists who opposed Zionism, and the cold-hearted imperial real-politik behind American support for Israel, often carried out by right-wing Christian fundamentalists with no concern for the welfare of Jewish people.
