John Sewell isn't the kind of guy who comes out of a life-threatening experience promising to do things differently. The former mayor still plays the role of watchdog for neighbourhoods, justice and the public interest in Goliath Toronto.

 Excerpt:

"I've always been fairly serious about life," says Sewell, 68, adding that his guiding principle "do what's right" has served him well. For the past 40 years, it made him a righteous municipal crusader, fearless about holding police to account and relentless in fighting reckless urban planning. The preservation of some of the most livable neighbourhoods anywhere like Cabbagetown and the Annex is thanks to Sewell and a fellow band of reformists in the 1970s.
