An examination of Myanmar's complex ethnic makeup and the rivalries that exist between these groups.
Abstract: --
Excerpt:
The rivalry between various ethnic groups reflects the deep-rooted divisions in Burmese society. Under British rule (1824-1948), the Shan"lords of the sky" controlled dozens of small principalities that each had a modicum of independence. The ta'ang, famed for the quality of their tea, resented the aritocratic manners of the Shan, though the latter also suffered discrimination at the hands of the Bamar.
