A look at the destruction of wetlands along the Louisiana Coast as a result of rising sea levels and the practices of the hydrocarbon industry.
Abstract: --
Excerpt:
The Louisiana bayou is disappearing — because of rising sea levels, coastal erosion, land subsidence and an estimated 10,000 miles of canals dug by oil companies (2) — and with it goes a way of life. Billiot is 70 and was born and raised on the bayou: "I have been fishing on my own for 55 years. When I started, I caught crab and shrimp in the summer and there was land left that you could trap in the winter. There was always more than enough, but now the muskrat are all gone and I have to motor for hours sometimes just to catch a little something."
