Abstract:  In that hallowed space of the Oxford Union, a largely white audience was confronted with a figure who demanded they reckon with their own complicity in systems of racial injustice. Malcolm X did not shy away from challenging them. He defended the motion, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue,” with the same vigor and resolve that had made him a prominent figure in the fight for civil rights. His argument was simple but seismic: oppressed people have the right to defend their freedom by whatever means necessary. It wasn’t just an American debate; it was a global declaration, an invitation for those in the room—and those watching from around the world—to choose sides.
