Antarctic airfield

Abstract: Britain has opened the door to tourism and possible mineral exploitation in the Antarctic by building an airfield at the remote Rothera scientific station 1,200 miles south of the Falklands. The airfield will allow people to get from London to Rothera in 48 hours instead of the five weeks it takes now. The British Antarctic Survey says it will make it possible for scientists to reach Antarctica more efficiently, but fears are being expressed that the airfield will also be used for tourism and as a base for mineral prospectors. The British government supports the Mineral Convention, which would allow mineral exploration in Antarctic.
