Abstract:  The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has released its latest report, Attacks on the Press 1990. The report records about 1,000 instances of abuse of the press around the world in 104 countries. According to the 132-page report, 32 journalists were killed in 15 countries, at least 80 others were assaulted, and 270 were detained as a result of reporting the news. The report says that journalists were denied access to controversial areas and activities twice as often in 1990 as in 1989. Twenty-three governments brought in laws restricting journalists' ability to report information. One of the countries mentioned in the report is Canada. According to the report, there were eleven incidents of journalists being interfered with in their attempts to cover the crisis at Oka in the summer of 1990.
