Abstract:  The federal Progressive Conservative government raised unemployment insurance premiums by 24 per cent on July 1. The boost is to make up for the withdrawal of $2 billion of federal funding for the program. The increase is in spite of a promise by the Minister of Finance in 1990 that there would be no further unemployment insurance premium increases for three years.
